Your badminton grip isn’t just a piece of tape—it’s your lifeline to the racket. A good grip keeps your hand steady, boosts your shots, and saves you from blisters or strain. With so many options, though, how do you choose? Let’s unpack the world of grips and get you handling your racket like a pro.
What types of badminton racquet grips are there?

There are quite a few, to say the least. But we'll take you through the most common ones here so that your hand is happy!

Badminton Racket Grips - The Two Most Common

There’s a king and queen of grips in the badminton world as we know it.
These are:

  • Polyurethane Grips (PU) - Replacement Grips/Over Grips
  • Towel Grips

The most commonly used brand of these are Yonex in there Yonex Super Grap for the Polyurethane type and the Yonex Towel Grip.

BUT of course there’s also other brands out there including the Volant essential grips, which come in a pack of 10 so you’ll never run out!

Anyway, unless you have incredibly sweaty hands or a seasoned professional, you may be better suited to the typical rubbery feel of Polyurethane. Of course, do try the towel grip as well if you think it is more suited to your needs!

The key difference and you can probably tell is the material used for both of these.

Polyurethane grips are a highly tacky/rubbery grip, that does alright at absorbing sweat too. It’s lighter than towel grips are and are relatively cheap.

These grips are sleeker and tougher—less absorbent but longer-lasting, with a tacky surface for control.
Overgrips (which are often made out of Polyurethane too) are thin layers you wrap over an existing grip for extra cushioning or a fresh feel; replacement grips are thicker, built to overhaul the handle entirely.

Towel grip is essentially made of cotton and does better at soaking up all that sweat but its weight can have an impact on your game if you’re used to the lightweight of polyurethane grips. Some players also prefer to the feeling of the towel instead of rubbery PU.

Towel grips are deemed to be beneficial for a more aggressive game but I’ve certainly never felt that way about them!

Anyway, these are the two grip types that you can consider and why you’d opt for either of them!

Thickness matters too. Thicker grips (1.8mm+) bulk up the handle, giving power players a firmer hold for smashes. Thinner ones (1.5mm or less) slim it down, sharpening control for net shots or quick flicks. Sweaty hands? Towel grips win. Dry palms? PU is your pick. Experiment to find your sweet spot—most rackets come with a standard grip you can tweak with an overgrip.

In contrast, gym workouts focus on targeted strength training and flexibility, allowing for customized exercises to build muscle and improve overall fitness.
