Strings wear out—it’s a fact of badminton life. Slack, frayed, or snapped strings kill your shots, so knowing when to restring keeps you sharp. How often depends on your play, and here’s how to figure it out—plus why Volant Badminton’s gear makes it easy.

The four main factors that determine how often you need to restring your racket is:

  1. Frequency of play (play more = restring more often)
  2. String tension (higher tension - restring more often)
  3. Type of string - especially the string thickness / gauge. (thinner gauge of string - restring more often)
  4. How hard you hit (hit hard or smash a lot - restring more often)

Regardless of what tension you string your racket at, that will drop the more you play with it, and the longer it has been since your last restring. It will also drop more if you string your rackets at a higher tension to begin with.

Here are some very (very) broad guidelines to get you on the right path and thinking about the most important things. There is definitely not one size fits all. Note, that these timings are estimated and if you mis-hit your shot, you string can break without a moment's notice. Read more about that here.

We all know that player who never restrings their racket until it breaks. So for that player, the timing of their restringing is guided by when/if their string breaks.

On average, casual players (1-2 times weekly) can stretch their restrings out to 3-6 months.

Frequent hitters (4+ times) need 1-2 months; tension drops faster with heavy use.

Smash a lot? High tension (28+ lbs) wears quicker—restring more frequently (often in less than a month)

Signs to watch: fraying (visible threads), notches (strings rubbing), or a dull “thud” instead of a crisp “ping.”

TLDR;

There's no set rule on when you need to restring your rackets as it is highly dependent on the factors above, and individual preference.

But overall, the time at which you restring your racket will be likely dictated by:

  1. How quickly your strings break
  2. How often you mis-hit your shot
  3. The degree of tension decrease that you can (and want to) tolerate
